We're up to five States now!

5th Feb 2026

We're back on track after last week's winter storm.  We're not used to eight inches of snow and 40mph winds - that coupled with the realllly cold temps have made this one of the most interesting winter season's we've had here on the Farm.

But neverthless, we press on with our 2026 Fifty States Project.

To recap our current 'journey' we've visited Alaska, Rhode Island, Delaware, and now Missouri and Washington State.

When I was much, much younger we flew in from overseas and stopped in St. Louis.  It was a long layover (not quite prop plane timeframe - but close!) and we ended up staying overnight.  We went and toured the St. Louis Arch, and I remeber being amazed that the elevators followed the curve of the arch all the way up. At the top you could see both East and West, and Tricia and I thought that a Pair of Eastern Blue Birds, the Missouri State bird, looking both East and West was the perfect metaphor for the great State.

We haven't yet visited Washington State, but we do have many customers there.  Back about 25 years ago we discovered a photograph of a famous petroglyph - a petroglyph of a flying owl - and thought it would make a fun carving.  So we dusted off that old pattern we drafted of the Columbia River Spedis Owl petroglyphs and recarved it using the knowledge and techniques we've learned in the intervening years.  Tricia's been fussing with his eyebrows, but I think she did a great job creating a paint design where one didn't exist.

Make sure to check back next week for the next installment.

Stay warm!
