Small Friends on Nantucket show 2024
18th Jul 2024
Waaaaay back in 1992, two young people were invited to show their work at a new art show in a unique place, for a special charity. Small Friends on Nantucket organized an art show (with the help of a professional show promoter) and hosted it (at the then new) Nantucket High School. Tricia and I made the 800 mile trip from our studio in Virginia Beach up to Nantucket and were instantly in love with the island, its history, and the people that visit it and those who call it home.
For the duration of the show we stayed at the iconic Veranda House, and were so young we couldn't even buy drinks at the Club Car. We had a magical time, and the show went well for everyone, and became an institution right up until covid19 hit and changed the world.
In 1992 (and for the next 27 years) we spent two weeks every summer on Nantucket for the show. We were a small part of helping Small Friends raise literally millions of dollars over that span. Money that went directly to their core mission: providing early child care and education for those who might not be able to afford private child care.
Today, that mission has not changed, but the show has. Tricia and I miss not being on the island for two weeks in July. But we still cherish all the continuing ties we have to Nantucket. From the Mermaid and Whales we did for the Rose and Crown to our ongoing relationship with John Sylvia's gallery Four Winds, to all the commissions and special orders we've done over the years - we still consider Nantucket, our friends and clients, and the Small Friends Show a large reason for our continued success!
Thank you for supporting Small Friends, and for visiting our little corner of the internet.
